I am a current community college student at Community College of Philadelphia. In fact, I am submitting this idea from our pc lab on a Friday night. I think it is time we as a nation started to value and appreciate all the people who go to community colleges. I think we can do better than putting down students who are trying to get an education as a normal person. Normal here means a student with challenges who needs to overcome many challenging obstacles to just show up. Therefore by definition I am including just about everyone. To that end, when will we end the intentional institutional separation of students by either traditional or non-traditional. I mean is not the tradition to educate? Or are we intentionally segregating students based on age which according to equal opportunity would be considered a civil crime to most. Yet, everyday our education system creates the divide. Perhaps our tradition could be more focused on support, inclusion and intergenerational students working together. The current practice is to make sure we separate the types of students while studies show appearances or conditions do not determine intellectual quality. I think we need to apply meaningful actions to students in Community Colleges and as a result our democracy will begin to yield a greater seed harvest.
