  Discover College-OCTC- Funding/Support for High School Dual Credit

  I am a product of the OCTC Discover College program. At the age of 22, I have earned my Masters, I am a full time academic advisor at WKU, I teach for OCTC as an adjunct, and am putting together the pieces for my acceptance into a Doctoral program. Discover College gave me an outstanding boost to my colllege eduation. The program offered my peers the opportunity to make college an option in their future when before ...more »

  I am a product of the OCTC Discover College program. At the age of 22, I have earned my Masters, I am a full time academic advisor at WKU, I teach for OCTC as an adjunct, and am putting together the pieces for my acceptance into a Doctoral program. Discover College gave me an outstanding boost to my colllege eduation. The program offered my peers the opportunity to make college an option in their future when before it was nothing but a far off dream. I strongly encourage high schools and area community colleges to stand up in supporting these programs to provide more funding and support for these students.

  In Aiming for "Student Success" How Do We Know If or What our Students Are Actually Learning?

  It seems that in the current focus on things like "student success" and "achieving [some type of] dream" we have abandoned the need to understand if and what our students are actually learning in the process. Is the assessment of actual student learning a practical priority, or has it become a 'third rail' in education?

  Support STEM Student Research at Community Colleges

  Undergraduate research programs at community colleges have demonstrably increased the success and retention of underrepresented students. Unfortunately, community colleges lack the equipment and infrastructure for helping students carry out original research.   Increase funding for Academic and Career Counseling

  Trained professional counseling faculty are critical to help students identify and achieve their academic goals. Students greatly benefit from the support of counseling faculty to make informed decisions and to learn the skills to be successful in college. Funding to increase the counselor-to-student ratio would lead to higher graduation rates.
