  Counselors should Counsel

  I suggest that counselors actually counsel. With the psychological and counseling theoretical and practical applications provided in and engaged in graduate studies, counselors should be allowed to develop programs in which individual and group counseling are provided for the student.   I suggest that counselors actually counsel. With the psychological and counseling theoretical and practical applications provided in and engaged in graduate studies, counselors should be allowed to develop programs in which individual and group counseling are provided for the student. The concepts and activities of counseling (theoretical approach) and advising (non-theoretical approach) should be delineated for and communicated to the student and public communities. Counselors and faculty advisors should be mandated to work together in new student orientations and career day events on and off campus.

  Increase funding for Academic and Career Counseling

  Trained professional counseling faculty are critical to help students identify and achieve their academic goals. Students greatly benefit from the support of counseling faculty to make informed decisions and to learn the skills to be successful in college. Funding to increase the counselor-to-student ratio would lead to higher graduation rates.

  invite more academic counselors from CCs and four-year institutions

  I respectfully suggest that the summit not neglect the valuable input of academic counselors from both community colleges and four-year institutions. These stakeholders can speak not only to the importance of standardizing transfer requirements, but also to the ways in which their services might help to improve retention rates.
