I disagreeIt seems that in the current focus on things like "student success" and "achieving [some type of] dream" we have abandoned the need to understand if and what our students are actually learning in the process. Is the assessment of actual student learning a practical priority, or has it become a 'third rail' in education?

I disagreeLearning is cumulative and continuous. Therefore, we need a structure that begins in pre-school and continues throughout a person's life. We need to develop human capital (the knowledge, skills & abilities that an individual posses) to effectively meet our country's economic needs to effectively compete in a global economy. Learning is cumulative and continuous. Therefore, we need a structure that begins in pre-school and continues throughout a person's life. We need to develop human capital (the knowledge, skills & abilities that an individual posses) to effectively meet our country's economic needs to effectively compete in a global economy. Human capital development needs to be specific, relevant, and verifiable. Individuals, companies, countries and economies are intertwined and highly contingent upon individuals having the right skill mix in order to have a competitive edge.

I disagreeAs accrediting bodies become scrutinized by the Dept. of Higher Education assessment will become the norm. Standardized testing will arrive at the comm. coll. level as it has in K-12. Community colleges need to stop the crap about instructors creating and evaluating assessments (teachers already assess - it's called a grade). Standardized models should be adopted (that's the whole point anyway to make someone else ...more »
