  Community College Experience

  Community College Experience I have truly enjoyed my experience at Tri-C.I have not had any major issues, or any big troubles. I didn’t exactly like High School, but coming here made me love coming to school and learning. I wanted to come to college so I can make something of my life. I would like to have a good job and be an educated adult. My whole experience is a pretty good one for me, and I don’t have any regrets ...more »

  Community College Experience

  I have truly enjoyed my experience at Tri-C.I have not had any major issues, or any big troubles. I didn’t exactly like High School, but coming here made me love coming to school and learning. I wanted to come to college so I can make something of my life. I would like to have a good job and be an educated adult. My whole experience is a pretty good one for me, and I don’t have any regrets coming here. I would like to finish my Associates in Business Management here, then move on to either Kent or another University.

  I would really like to thank the school for giving me a great opportunity. I am so happy that I am having a chance to do something meaningful and it’s just not that hard. I don’t have any real suggestions because I have not needed anything more. I am doing great and I know that if I need help, I can get it.

  My experience at CCC

  I have had a good experience at Cuyahoga Community College. The reason for me coming here is to better myself as well as further my education. I needed to return to school also before my credits expired and I would have to take a bunch of unnecessary classes for my major again. I also want to earn a degree to be able to provide for my son. The teachers that I have come across have been tremendously helpful in their teachings. ...more »

  I have had a good experience at Cuyahoga Community College. The reason for me coming here is to better myself as well as further my education. The teachers that I have come across have been tremendously helpful in their teachings. They actually take the time out to help their students in their weak areas. My goal for coming to college is to complete two years and join in the field of Phyiscal Therapy. I want to also continue after earning a Associate’s degree, I intend on earning a Bachelor’s degree also. Going through this process is making me a stronger person every day. It is not easy going to college but it is a challenge.

  I believe that Cuyahoga Community College can make this a better experience for students by adding more help financially. I believe the cost of textbooks is ridiculous. When students go back return books they get three fourths back from what they paid for it. I believe they could be a little lenient on the cost.

  Promote Positive Morals about Community Colleges.

  The negative things you would hear about Community College is that "It is not a real college education" or "It is too easy to be a college" All of this negative feedback can bring a student's moral down.   The negative things you would hear about Community College is that "It is not a real college education" or "It is too easy to be a college" All of this negative feedback can bring a student's moral down. Not knowing that in this community college that i attend in south texas helped me get a college degree and motivated me to continue my educational career. I think it is only fair in the workforce in society if you have two students that are applying for a job and one has a degree from a major university versus a degree from a community college via same major and same course should be treated the same. Community colleges has helped me so much. In Community College students have names and not just a number in the class. The one of one teaching has helped myself and others like college and motivates us to the point that we rather would go to school then work. Thank You Community Colleges around the nation for helping us students one day be successful in society and the workforce.

  I am in the culinary program and the Teachers and the Chefs have inspired me a great deal.They are so knowlegable and patient.

  The first semester i took English and mathand i had not been in school since i was 18 and i'm 42 years old . My english teacher

  help me in the writing lab because i had applied for a scholarship in my field and i had to write two essays. I did not think i was going to

  it but she motivated me so much i wrote them and i recieve it.

  At this moment i have not work in a few months due to the economy, i lost my job and the financial aid has really help a great deal

  so i can stay in school and get my education. I was in the childcare field for 14 years and after my son got married and left home, i decided

  to do my passion and join the culinary program.

  Tri-c has motivated me to become educated in my passion and the atmospere here is so relaxing and i can't wait to graduate with

  an associate degree in business in culinary arts.

  Community College is our future

  I personally chose an expensive, 4-year private liberal arts school because of its reputation, and I am kicking myself now. I owe thousands of dollars and could have easily started out at my community college and later transfered to somewhere else. If I could go back in time, I would definitely choose community college.   Scholarship Funding

  More funders should focus on granting scholarship money for students who are intelligent enough to choose to begin their studies at a less expensive community college and then transfer to a 4 year institution. I feel that most scholarship opportunities push students into jumping into a 4 year school and spending thousands before they have a chance to decide what they want to study.   I really don’t think I can make any kind of accurate narrative about my time here at Tri-C. This has only been my first semester. Everything seems to be going good so far.   I really don’t think I can make any kind of accurate narrative about my time here at Tri-C. This has only been my first semester. Everything seems to be going good so far. I needed to start working towards my chosen career. Whatever that may be; I haven’t quite settled yet. The only thing I have a problem with is the Financial Aid office. I get so frustrated just trying to get an answer from them. I will email them, they won’t write back. I will call, and there will be a 20 minute wait before I even get to a real person. My last choice is to go to the actual office and then be treated like a burden or a nuisance. I don’t like being treated that way. I want to believe what I do matters.

  4 year option

  I really feel that community colleges should be changed into 4-year comprehensive schools. They are local, affordable options in our current economy. Why not stay at the same school where you started for all 4 years. Students feel this culture where you must "go away" to school when it makes much more sense to live at home for at least 2-4 more years to share costs and save money.

  Hopeless Counselors!!!

  I’m extremely disappointed in the counselors that are hired in our community college. I have seen over a dozen different counselors and have yet to find someone who actually knows what they are talking about. They don’t have enough education and/or training to become a counselor. Majority could care less about your future. The only thing they do is hand you an IGETC list and refer you to assist.org and send you on your ...more »

  Hands-On Learning & Better Counseling

  Community college is a great place for students to get ahead and get a career if they are lacking funds or had a hard life. However, hands on learning is in fact lacking and would be such a great addition to the schools. More labs, funded field trips, and hands on research would benefit the students, and prepare the students for their future in the workfield.   Community college is a great place for students to get ahead and get a career if they are lacking funds or had a hard life.

  However, hands on learning is in fact lacking and would be such a great addition to the schools. More labs, funded field trips, and hands on research would benefit the students, and prepare the students for their future in the workfield.

  When it comes to the transfer center or simply advising students with career choices, colleges definitely need a program to aid students aside from counselors with a neverending schedule. A speaker should be sent to colleges to help with career choices and a detailed description of what their future is going to look like after community college- the real world. That speaker should then form a group at the college comprised of both alumni and faculty to offer assistance to students.

  Part-time Pay and Benefits

  It is ridiculous that teachers at community colleges are getting paid less than teachers at high schools and elementary schools in some instances. They typically have at least a Master's degree and are specialists in their fields. This is not right and we will begin to lose quality teachers if we do not begin to pay them a correct salary with good benefits.

  College Funds

  I believe each College in its own communities know there strength and weaknesses, Colleges should have the opportunity to acquire the use of funds that will aid in each area of their community by strengthening the community with better job markets.   I believe each College in its own communities know there strength and weaknesses, Colleges should have the opportunity to acquire the use of funds that will aid in each area of their community by strengthening the community with better job markets. Texas Colleges should have more resources to stimulate job markets especially in rural areas where poverty is at its highest. Education beyond high school in College have to accommodate all levels of educated students based on their level of knowledge to enable them achieve their goal, and with that comes responsibilities. Colleges should have realistic goals for students as not to over-spend / over exhaust student’s resources, each individual at his/her potential. If colleges get together in strengthening the job market, with realistic goals for each student; we should be ok. We need more vocational jobs resources, and Community Colleges provide trainings, but not enough resources to promote better pay in those job markets. Students who graduate from a four year degree cannot find jobs in rural areas due in part salary range

  Economic World Leadership

  Our future is in our youth. But the importance of education and college has yet to be understood from a the service industry blue collar background. No offense meant. There is also a need for a higly skilled trade labor force.We still have to fix those elctrical plants built in the 30's, that we're running on, the infra structure that Roosevelt built with the CCC. The tool and die man without a computer. Now individuals are getting jobs who have a degree but can't do the work because they have a degree but don't understand the work involved and what it takes to fix something in our infrastructure! Help!

  We need medical coders, not just for the doctor's office but for the hospitals who can do the actual coding without outsourcing and costing the hospital system millions of dollars. The same for the OSHA standard and licensing and training. Companies are expecting individuals to do their jobs but aren't providing the proper training or allowing the time on the job for the updating of computer training, yet the upper management enjoys large bonuses and pay raises with a minimum of employees?! This irresponsibility of some companies has been going on for years. Yet, we wonder why the middle class is disappeearing. Let's train and give proper education to those positions that will continue to give us an economic world leadership in 5 years looking at stats of trading, etc. and keep the middle class from further downfall.

  Faculty is the Core Resource

  I suggest more attention is paid to the faculties in the community college in general. Due to the budget cuts, more and more educators in a community college are part-timers, many of which don't even have office hours.   broadcasting the closing remarks

  Thank you very much for synthesizing the six panels into concise summaries. I recommend that the facilitators find a way to combine the main points (especially where repeated in more than one panel) and release them online for use in continuing discussion within and without community college "communities."

  You need to ask more teachers what they think--as too often in all such discussions, this is much too much of an administrators' love fest. I'm also going to list my own ideas, because I think they're disappearing in the mass: a) change books and bookstores; turn cc bookstores into something like Netflix, hand students an IPad or its equivalent, download a rentable copy of texts.   You need to ask more teachers what they think--as too often in all such discussions, this is much too much of an administrators' love fest.

  I'm also going to list my own ideas, because I think they're disappearing in the mass:

  a) change books and bookstores; turn cc bookstores into something like Netflix, hand students an IPad or its equivalent, download a rentable copy of texts. And change the regs requiring needles text updates, and fund bookstores so they needn't be cash cows.

  b) none of the data collections systems work well, implement easily, cost little, and talk to each other well. Standardize them, and throw out their endless bells&whistles in favor of simple necessities.

  c) do something about "economies of scale," especially for small, rural colleges. We often have the same costs as the big plpaces--with far fewer stuents and local revenues to support them.

  d) standardize the technology--and above all, quit worrying about the fancy stuff to the detriment of meat and potatoes. We have lots of tech...and no money for maintenance, or to ensure that every student even has a simple computer.

  Partner retired community college employees with adult students in a mentor relationship. A drop-out prone college improved its retention rate with mentor programs and a smart phone distribution program that helped faculty keep in touch with students. I believe older returning students who have personal contact with retired college employees will improve retention rates and utilize the unused but incredibly vibrant pool of retirees.

  Although, the program would be administered locally, a national platform of resources to support the program should be established to enable colleges to implement with little impact on staff time at the local level. The national platform would provide: web site with resources for mentors, software programs to manage personnel, and if necessary training for each campus to manage the database programs.
