The Truth, Higher Education

I feel tuition has become astronomical for most four year colleges and universities. Community colleges provide a great opportunity at a reasonable price. The tuition at Tri-C is equal to only about a third of that of Akron University’s, the college I initially planned on attending. It would be nice if there were more Community colleges around. I have to travel nearly 45 minutes to class to receive the discounted education.
I do have an issue with the governments stringent standards placed on students trying to better themselves. The dependency status for individuals under the age of 24 receiving Federal aid is ridiculous. I have been independent from my parents since the age of 18, but under current policy my government aid is limited due to my parents being liable for a nearly half the cost of my education, based on what their income is. This has been a huge set back, while personally trying to tackle college debt on my own at the age of 21. I feel aid should be based on performance of students; not circumstances beyond ones control.
We bail out banks! We bail out auto makers! What about our education? I feel some of those billions could be used toward college and higher learning through increased financial aid. Let’s face it college is the new high school. The status of our country is proof of that. Though grades k-12 are important, they do little to prepare kids for the world we live into today. To apply for a job beyond your average low income labor, with only a high school diploma is pointless waste of time. A degree has become the status quote like a High school diploma 25 years ago.
If you want our economy to prosper again, attack the problem at the source. Money is only a result of a good system; a good system is a result of higher education.
