  Adjuncts need a place at this table!

  I strongly suggest that you include adjunct faculty in future discussions. We outnumber full-time faculty at the community college level, and are marginalized enough as it is. If change is to occur, the voices of those "in the trenches" need to be heard.

  Funding for mathlabs and libraries

  The mathlabs and libraries seem to be very small, and there are less and less faculty/staff working in the mathlab. There are not enough tutors for the number of students needing help. Maybe more funding for the libraries and mathlabs of community college could help the learning experience of the students and help them to study and fully understand what they are learning.

  I am so proud and happy to hear about this event. Thank you, Dr. Biden and President Obama. I am a graduate of a community college and a current university student. I could not be more glad that I chose to begin my career in higher education at Riverside City College in my hometown of Riverside, California.   I am so proud and happy to hear about this event. Thank you, Dr. Biden and President Obama. I am a graduate of a community college and a current university student. I could not be more glad that I chose to begin my career in higher education at Riverside City College in my hometown of Riverside, California. I inherited an appreciation of the community college from my grandfather, Tom Johnson. Born and raised in Omaha, Nebraska, he moved to California in part because of his interest in the California community college. He was passionate about public education and dedicated to his work as a community college teacher and administrator. My grandfather believed that the community college was America's greatest contribution to education and that it was the most democratic of all institutions of higher learning. My experience as a community college student confirmed my grandfather's belief and inspired me to want to become a community college professor as well.

  As a community college student, I benefited from being in the Honors Program. I was able to gain a strong academic foundation, participate in meaningful discussion due to smaller class sizes, be a part of a learning community of Honors students, and develop relationships with excellent professors. The Honors Program also proved a great resource in the transfer process. I think all community colleges would benefit from developing Honors curriculums and programs.

With the psychological and counseling theoretical and practical applications provided in and engaged in graduate studies, counselors should be allowed to develop programs in which individual and group counseling are provided for the student. The concepts and activities of counseling (theoretical approach) and advising (non-theoretical approach) should be delineated for and communicated ...more »

  Better opportunities for Part time students!!!

  Since I work full time I can only take classes in the evening but unfortunately the classes that I need for my major are not offered in the evening. There are only a handful of classes offered in the evening or online. I don’t have a lot of options. Please give part time students who want to pursue their education a chance by offering more classes in the evening and/or online.

  I am the mother of a US Marine veteran of Iraq who remains in active duty. Do recruiters truthfully portray educational benefits? The use of community colleges by veterans is well established. However, I believe that high school students and their parents are being misled by military recruiters about opportunities to take college credit courses during initial committment periods of active duty military service. I have submitted an FOIA request to the Department of Defense, but have been given the run around. I seek facts about: the number of recruits submitting for tuition assistance for college credit courses compared to the total number of recruits, all during a defined period of initial active duty service. In other words, I want to know the percentage of active duty military personnel who actually use educational benefits/tuition assistance during their first committment period for active duty military service. I now ask Dr. Jill Biden and the American Association of Community Colleges to assist with an FOIA request, and to assure transparency and truth in recruitment marketing about educational opportunities during active duty military service for all branches of the US armed services under the Department of Defense.

  Expensive Textbooks

  A typical college student spends roughly $1,000 a year on textbooks. Why? I highly doubt the curriculum is going to change that significantly by next year. I have two organic chemistry books from the same class. One came from a friend who was a year ahead of me. I wanted to prep. The other I purchased when I attended the class. Outside the cover, and the color of the table of contents, it's the exact same book. It’s insane; ...more »

  Global Competencies and Less Bureacratic

  Incorporate mandatory international education programs, infused throughout curriculum and activities, in order to produce graduates that are prepared for the globalized world in which we live. Also, develop a mechanism to make community colleges less bureaucratic and political (a bit challenging if the boards are appointed by State Governors who tend to pick within their parties) and more student and learning centered. ...more »

  Graduation rates at 2 year colleges do not provide the whole picture

  It is imperative that other data is considered beyond graduation rates from community colleges. Many don't complete their degree because they have transferred successfully and are working towards a baccalaureate degree. That to students and to faculty IS successful completion.

  Internships, job placement

  Connect with employers to help provide additional internships. Look at skills and decide what is necessary in the next “X” years and implement a strategy to place this information within the academic programs. Look at the possibility of job placement opportunities as a step in extended industry partnerships.

  ivyVILOs (Video Interactive Learning Objects) at Ivy Tech Community College-Northeast (www.ivyvilos.com) provides ALL students access to more than 100 short videos that cover areas and concepts for students to better understand and then retain. The students can go over those concepts as many times as possible (becomes a visual aid that students can see the concept in action). This is all made possible through the support ...more »

This is all made possible through the support of the Lincoln Financial Foundation. Results have been more than positive, and instructors have actually changed teaching methods based because of this assistance in the classroom. Another example: as technology continues to emerge, even more educational opportunities will become available (alternate media) to aid towards all kinds of learning styles. Another example: Offering more online classes to students in need of certain sections of courses. This also requires continue to encourage faculty online certification. Success rates in online remediation courses is 25% as opposed to 50% otherwise; it is something different to be sure it is a viable experience (quality matters). Another example: There is a demand for additional face-to-face courses, as well. Another example: Consider the audience. Do students wanting to register for online classes know what kind of technology is involved in advance (high-speed Internet or even a computer)? Responsibly manage online growth, quality courses/faculty, etc. Another example: Accelerated degree programs with condensed coursework for specific audiences. Another example: Continue to deploy a significant amount of technology to students to assist in educational efforts, by keeping in mind the audience, their needs, remedial needs. How does technology/sofware get us to where we need to be? Another example: Continue to embed professional certifications in the academic programs.

  Ivy Tech's Achieving the Dream initiative is a focused effort on retention and completion; recommendations were made and a number of strategies have been launched to help that effort (mandatory orientation; mandatory advising; mandatory payment date, hiring of addition positions to assist in these endeavors [advisors], just to name a few).

  Military Service Community College

  I would suggest that, like the Air Force, the other services implement their own community college systems, with an eye toward consolidation in the future. In addition, each training center for the services should be accredited so that no matter the training, a service member obtains credits toward a degree. This should include lower and upper level credits at some point, depending on the level of technical complexity, etc. Eventually, it'd be great to see training centers offer specialized associate degree programs, akin to the Defense Language Institute's (DLI) associate of arts degree in language which every graduate can earn after adding just a few general elective credits. I personally earned my first Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) degree in Russian Interpreting and Translating way back when I first joined the Air Force in 1984. Later, as an instructor I was awarded another CCAF degree in Instructor of Technology and Military Science, which spurred me to finish my Bachelor's form CSU-Sacramento, then later my Master's in Education from the University of Phoenix (UPhx). As I approach retirement from the service, I'm now a doctoral candidate in Educational Leadership from UPhx, doing a study that goes back to my original training roots at DLI. All this because early on, I had commanders who advocated for education and training to get higher levels of skills and higher degrees that would benefit our service work and our job opportunities when we separated or retired from active duty. and a system that helped inspire me to be a lifelong learner.

  Ok, so a reoccuring theme in these posts was a lack of support groups for veterans. I really took this all to heart and started a facebook group that right now provides alot of college advice to veterans, but the goal of the group is for other veterans at community colleges nationwide to start their own facebook page and provide the URL to their Benefits Certifing Offical that can then share it with incoming vets. I really took this all to heart and started a facebook group that right now provides alot of college advice to veterans, but the goal of the group is for other veterans at community colleges nationwide to start their own facebook page and provide the URL to their Benefits Certifing Offical that can then share it with incoming vets. Those of us that have made it thru the struggles of the first year out need to help the new guys, and I am throwing the first rope. Search for the group soldiers2scholars on facebook, be easy on the remarks as I just started it today and it has some refining to go thru, but I think it could lead to something great (and it really only took an hour to do, so please emulate the idea and follow the tutorial on starting your colleges own Soldiers2Scholars facebook page).

  Fulltime: Label Denied Adjuncts

  Many of us adjuncts work more than what might be designated as full time when considering the several colleges at which we serve. However, because no one institution designates us as full time, we are ineligible for Public Service Loan Forgiveness that is afforded our colleagues. Thousands of dollars in hidden benefits are reaped through this simple designation that is denied those of us who lack the label when we are ...more »

  Thousands of dollars in hidden benefits are reaped through this simple designation that is denied those of us who lack the label when we are working equal or more hours.

  The $135K I have in student loans that underwrote my three graduate degrees will be paid back through my hobbled-together adjunct part time status at several schools, without consideration of the hours I work that exceeds those of my colleagues who carry the coveted label of "full time."

Not only are more and more students not going back to their universities because they can no longer afford it, but now, many like myself can barely get together enough money to pay for community college.   A plan to move U.S. higher education out of the quagmire of the two-tier faculty system is the Program for Change: 2010-2030. It identifies over 30 discrete areas, some involving costs but many low or no costs, whereby the situation of non-tenured faculty can be made normal and respectable.   Support Staff

  Nothing was mentioned unless i missed it about staff that support the faculty. Some staff like myself are working and going to school to obtain a degree. So many times the funding and the focus is on faculty but they forget who support these faculty.

  A grateful citizen

  I suggest that we as citizens should be grateful & eager to provide full-time and part-time teachers with 1) significant salary increases 2) quality health insurance & benefits 3) the PRESTIGE & RESPECT THEY DESERVE 4) the freedom & resources they determine a neccessity to educate the minds of our future 5) listen to their experience & wisdom 6) etc... I am not a teacher, but I am a home owner & tax payer. dot

  The Experience of Tri-C

  For international students, the Cuyahoga Community College is good news to me because I could live with my family and learn in college. It’s not only improves English, but also understands American culture entirely. Nowadays, the world likes a small village, the people from all over the world want communication and study of foreign experience, especially American’s advanced science and technology. Only a few of international students can effort expensive tuition in the U.S. Universities. Even some of them get American scholarship. For me, a regular foreigner, just want living with my relative a period of time, learning English and international business for making some import and export trade between China and American. It’s impossible previously, and I had never heard about the Community College of USA in China. Now, the Cuyahoga Community College is a new way for oversea students. The class time is flexible, the course is flexible, and the instructors have a lot of practical experience, not only the academes. I appreciate that the Cuyahoga Community College bridges and facilitates exchanges between us and provides a platform for this opportunity. I think more international students come in the Cuyahoga Community College may stimulate territorial economic because they are good all consumer. The only thing which I feel toughly is international students have to take 12 credits. So, I don’t have enough time enjoy life with my family.
