I disagreeWhat is the Procedure to for a CCR Contractor College to apply for WIB under the Community Services Unit? We have 32 Defense Contractors in the Immediate Area, 63 Black Ops, 2 Air Force and one Navy Base [China Lake, Edwards AFB, AF Plant 42, NASA Dryden Labs, Tejon Ranch Operations, etc.] It is needed to stay open, the College Admin wants to close the unit.

Even after several people have registered for the class and paid the fees.
They need to listen to their faculty and keep the most competent deans and teachers, not terminate them to get new cheaper and often incompetent teachers and non-union teachers. They have not partnered with either Edwards AFB nearby, the companies located at AF Plant 42, or the other Aviation related companies in this area. They have been here 86 years and still have not sufficiently reached out to the community companies. The Community Services unit has only been here less than 5 years, and they want to close it, this is insane! Can anyone help? see: www.avc.edu

I disagreeThis country is in dire need of re-examining the ways in which adjunct faculty are hired, retained, and remunerated. The adjunct system is a travesty, an abuse of power, and a detriment to the educational system in America. The inequities have got to STOP! For example, two instructors teaching four (4) sections a term equals a departmental standard of eight (8). If the department then employs part-time instructors to teach eight (8) or more sections per term for three consecutive terms, then the department has the contractual right to request a new permanent full-time position.

I disagreePlease abandon the standardized test as a means to gauge student and teacher performance. There are many studies that suggest that these tests measure the financial situation of the learner rather than the learning status of that learner or the teacher effectiveness. Outcome based learning is essentially the same thing as standardized testing as both work together to try to idiot-proof education. Do we want innovation ...more »
Please abandon the standardized test as a means to gauge student and teacher performance. There are many studies that suggest that these tests measure the financial situation of the learner rather than the learning status of that learner or the teacher effectiveness. Outcome based learning is essentially the same thing as standardized testing as both work together to try to idiot-proof education. Do we want innovation and leadership in the country? If so we need to grow it it cannot be stamped from a manufacturing mold.

I disagreeAs I read through all these ideas (some of them are incredibly on-target) I am left wondering what is to happen to these ideas. Is this yet another forum where our concerns and suggestions to improve the status quo in the very places where the government purports to have such concern-- is this forum yet another void into which to cast ideas that nobody will ever read? Will they ever actually be considered, tabulated, ...more »
As I read through all these ideas (some of them are incredibly on-target) I am left wondering what is to happen to these ideas. Is this yet another forum where our concerns and suggestions to improve the status quo in the very places where the government purports to have such concern-- is this forum yet another void into which to cast ideas that nobody will ever read? Will they ever actually be considered, tabulated, brought to a bigger discussion? What is the point? Teachers were not really invited to the summit. The organizers didn't care then, and they don't care now. Somebody please tell me that these ideas have a use- that they will go somewhere and be considered, discussed, HEARD.

I disagreeI propose a vote for new ideas of how to attain a college degree (BA, BS and AA). Can city colleges gain merits for BA and BS degrees? The more available education is, the easier it is to get it started.

I disagreeI appreciate the fact that GOD allowed you and the United States Government provisions for students the opportunity to attend college. I attended IVY TECH community College in Indianapolis, IN and they were willing to work with a variety of students in order to open the door to higher education. I disagreeBefore the beginning of the fall semester colleagues sent me a list of their online homework in a 4 credit class. I felt it was not enough and augmented the assignments. Last week a student came to me complaining of 3 hours of work a week on this class. Remember we don't pull punches - we are clear up front that the average student is expected to do 2 hours of outside work for each credit. This would mean 8 hours ...more »

Remember we don't pull punches - we are clear up front that the average student is expected to do 2 hours of outside work for each credit. This would mean 8 hours for the average (C) student. Woody Allen said, "90% of life is showing up." This should not be true of college and community colleges although some people, erroneously, think of community college as grade 13. It's real college - not college lite.
Moral of this story: Student's need to expect to actually WORK - not merely show up.

"Who would you rather date, Sarah Palin or her?" a male student asked as he pointed to the TV screen. I had to share this story. While graduate math and MD programs are about 50% women, women are still a minority in other science and engineering. There is sexism in college that math and MD programs have overcome and science, technology, and engineering departments have yet to overcome.

I disagreeCommunity colleges are the unsung backbone of America's system of higher education. The alternative are the "for profit" schools that saddle unsuspecting students with a huge amount of debt and often worthless degrees.

I disagreeOne of the critical literacy for the 21st. century apart from language, information and digital literacy is cultural literacy. A course on basic global cultural literacy should be essential part of the curriculum in every community college. This would not only help in global understanding but also enhance job opportunities

I disagreeThey should decrease fee hikes, by reducing the cuts that are happening almost every single year. More money and attention should be given to colleges as they provide a large percentage of degrees.

I have certain classes I need to take but the school only has limited amount of classes.
Though every year number of students are growing each year.

I disagreeOnce again, the instructors are left out. The front page of the summit website described this link as a place for "administrators, students and stakeholders" to exchange ideas. Maybe, we're included in the stakeholders, but somehow, I don't think so.

I disagreeI think we should give tax breaks to teachers AND students who volunteer their time tutoring, as a financial incentive for more free educational assistance to be provided. It could be viewed as a sort of donation, as knowledge is the greatest gift, and this would also allow teachers to effectively be paid for the work they are already doing out of the goodness of their hearts.

I disagreeI strongly suggest that you include adjunct faculty in future discussions. We outnumber full-time faculty at the community college level, and are marginalized enough as it is. If change is to occur, the voices of those "in the trenches" need to be heard.

I disagreeThe mathlabs and libraries seem to be very small, and there are less and less faculty/staff working in the mathlab. There are not enough tutors for the number of students needing help. Maybe more funding for the libraries and mathlabs of community college could help the learning experience of the students and help them to study and fully understand what they are learning.

I am so proud and happy to hear about this event. Thank you, Dr. Biden and President Obama. I am a graduate of a community college and a current university student. I could not be more glad that I chose to begin my career in higher education at Riverside City College in my hometown of Riverside, California. I inherited an appreciation of the community college from my grandfather, Tom Johnson. Born and raised in Omaha, Nebraska, he moved to California in part because of his interest in the California community college. He was passionate about public education and dedicated to his work as a community college teacher and administrator. My grandfather believed that the community college was America's greatest contribution to education and that it was the most democratic of all institutions of higher learning. My experience as a community college student confirmed my grandfather's belief and inspired me to want to become a community college professor as well.
As a community college student, I benefited from being in the Honors Program. I was able to gain a strong academic foundation, participate in meaningful discussion due to smaller class sizes, be a part of a learning community of Honors students, and develop relationships with excellent professors. The Honors Program also proved a great resource in the transfer process. I think all community colleges would benefit from developing Honors curriculums and programs.

The concepts and activities of counseling (theoretical approach) and advising (non-theoretical approach) should be delineated for and communicated to the student and public communities. Counselors and faculty advisors should be mandated to work together in new student orientations and career day events on and off campus.

I disagreeSince I work full time I can only take classes in the evening but unfortunately the classes that I need for my major are not offered in the evening. There are only a handful of classes offered in the evening or online. I don’t have a lot of options. Please give part time students who want to pursue their education a chance by offering more classes in the evening and/or online.

I am the mother of a US Marine veteran of Iraq who remains in active duty. Do recruiters truthfully portray educational benefits? The use of community colleges by veterans is well established. However, I believe that high school students and their parents are being misled by military recruiters about opportunities to take college credit courses during initial committment periods of active duty military service. I have submitted an FOIA request to the Department of Defense, but have been given the run around. I seek facts about: the number of recruits submitting for tuition assistance for college credit courses compared to the total number of recruits, all during a defined period of initial active duty service. In other words, I want to know the percentage of active duty military personnel who actually use educational benefits/tuition assistance during their first committment period for active duty military service. I now ask Dr. Jill Biden and the American Association of Community Colleges to assist with an FOIA request, and to assure transparency and truth in recruitment marketing about educational opportunities during active duty military service for all branches of the US armed services under the Department of Defense.

I have two organic chemistry books from the same class. One came from a friend who was a year ahead of me. I wanted to prep. The other I purchased when I attended the class. Outside the cover, and the color of the table of contents, it's the exact same book. It’s insane; ...more »
