Proven Methods to improve student outcomes

I'd like to share an article I published in Tomorrow's Professor that offers research on a powerful and evidence-supported approach to improve student retention, success and persistence to graduation:

Synthesizing best practices from innovators in psychology, education, business, sports, and personal effectiveness, the goal of the On Course approach represents eight of the essential "things" that good learners believe and do. By guiding students to adopt these principles and tools, it empowers them to become more effective partners in their own education, giving them the outer behaviors and inner qualities to create greater success in college and in life.

Please take a careful look at a proven approach with significant results... (see http://www.oncourseworkshop.com/Data.htm)

  1. We have incorporated the On Course principles into a study skills/life skills at the United States Air Force Academy Prep School. Of all of the changes we have made over the ten years I have been at the Prep School, this course has made the greatest difference in the success of our students. I highly recommend it for all colleges but especially those dealing with struggling students.

  3. We have incorporated On Course principles in the design for learning communities for basic skills students in math, composition, and reading. Those students who have been taught using On Course principles and strategies have had significantly higher retention and persistence rates than those students who are only in the content classes.

We have also infused On Course across the curriculum, training teaching & counseling faculty, student support services staff, and other staff who interact with students.

  4. We are currently using On Course Principles and strategies both in and outside of the classroom in order to create a culture of personal responsibility at our college. The On Course data backs up what I've observed: students learn to take responsibility for their lives and see themselves as empowered to make better choices in order to achieve their goals.

  5. I applaud the good work, the concern for students. I'm sorry to sound cynical.

However, there are far too many buzzwords here, far too much, well, psychobabble. Far too often, students have been handed various sorts of life coaching as a substitute for enough money and peace and quiet to study effectively.

I can only agree that many times, their habits and modes of thought are in their way. But as a student who began at 23--I'd have been tremendously offended by this sort of thing.

Self-confidence isn't built by working just on self-confidence. It's built bby learning.
